Microneedling Q&A

What is microneedling?

Microneedling is a treatment for your skin that induces collagen growth to improve your complexion and strengthen your skin. With normal aging, your skin’s collagen declines. This decline leads to the development of wrinkles, sagging, scarring, and other unfavorable skin features.

At Wellness Medicine McKinney, Dr. Philips performs each microneedling treatment using SkinPen®, a microneedling device with multiple tiny needles at its tip. She uses the device to puncture your skin’s surface, and the needles leave behind tiny holes in your skin.

In response to the punctures, your skin begins the process of healing and growing new collagen. This process takes place over several months after your treatment so that you won’t see the full effect immediately. However, the results are long-lasting, and your skin can better absorb nutrients after your microneedling session.

What is microneedling with PRP?

We use SkinPen for microneedling. There are different types of pens to be used for microneedling, however here at Wellness Medicine Mckinney, we use SkinPen Microneedling.
Microneedling with PRP is a treatment that incorporates platelet-rich plasma, or PRP, into the process. Platelet-rich plasma is a solution created from a small sample of your own blood, which is prepared to deliver a high concentration of platelets directly to your skin.

Those platelets are filled with growth factors that promote swift healing and cellular regeneration, enhancing and boosting the effects of microneedling.

How does microneedling improve my skin?

The healing and collagen growth after microneedling results in numerous improvements to your complexion and skin quality. Microneedling treats several specific blemishes and skin imperfections that tend to increase with age.

After one or more microneedling procedures at Wellness Medicine McKinney, you may notice fewer:

  • Acne scars
  • Wrinkles and fine lines
  • Large pores
  • Sun spots
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Melasma
  • Stretch marks
  • Rough textures

Overall, your skin might also look brighter and feel smoother than before your treatment. Depending on the starting condition of your skin, Dr. Philips might recommend that you get more than one microneedling treatment for optimal improvements.

How long does it take to heal after microneedling?

Recovery after a microneedling or microneedling with PRP procedure is minimal. You won’t need to request time off work or away from school in order to allow your skin time to heal or hide it as it does.

Your skin is more sensitive than usual and may be a bit inflamed for about 48 hours. Refrain from sunscreen, cosmetics, sun exposure, or dirty environments for 48 hours following the procedure. You can restart sunscreen and topicals about 2-3 days after treatment.

Before using your normal skin care products after microneedling, be sure to show them to Dr. Philips. She can tell you whether or not you need to swap them out because of harsh ingredients that could damage or irritate your skin.

Microneedling can transform your skin to look as it did in its more youthful stages. To schedule your consultation for a microneedling treatment at Wellness Medicine McKinney, call the office or book an appointment online today.
